Turning Information About God Into Experience With God
It’s possible to know a lot about God without actually having a relationship with him. Spiritual Formation ministry helps people turn what they know about God into experiences with God. We do this by introducing people to spiritual practices, offering spiritual direction and hosting The Clearing, a monthly contemplative worship experience.

A Contemplative Worship Experience
Clearing (noun): an open space in a forest, especially one used for cultivation
Our world is busy and noisy. The Clearing is a contemplative worship experience designed to create time and space to hear from God. During our time together we make space to meet with God by:
Spending time in silent prayer. Many of us spend the majority of our time with God talking. In this space we focus on listening and spending time in God’s presence. (Psalm 131:2) Focusing on a Scripture passage as we read it slowly and repetitively and asking the Spirit to speak to us. What word or phrase might the Spirit be highlighting for me today? What would he like to say to me through this word or phrase? What is my response to him? (Psalm 1:1&2)
Reflecting on the state of our souls by asking: When do I feel close to God? In what areas of my life am I feeling far from God? In what ways do I feel comforted by the Spirit? (Psalm 139:23&24)
The Clearing is an opportunity to obey God’s kind instruction to “Be Still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10) As we grow still we hear from God more clearly and give him access to deeper parts of who we are.
You are invited to join us on the second Saturday of each month from 9 AM to 10 AM in the Vineyard Café – Room c6. Childcare is available by reservation.

God invites each of us on a unique journey. As we follow him, there are times when we sense a clear path forward and at other times the trail is hard to find. Spiritual directors are trained to walk with you as you look for God at work in your life. We meet one-on-one with people, usually once a month to listen, offer observations and ask questions. The goal of spiritual direction is to mine beneath the surface of your life experience to look for where God is at work in your soul. How is he using your life circumstances? What is he inviting you to? How is he using your relationships to form you?
The practice of Christians offering Spiritual Direction to one another has a rich Biblical tradition. Joshua was spiritually directed by Moses, Elisha by Elijah, David by Nathan, Paul by Barnabas, the Ethiopian Eunuch by Philip, Timothy by Paul and Mark by Peter. When we offer spiritual direction we are offering the gift of Christian community to one another. (I Thessalonians 5:11)
Here’s what to expect when you meet with a spiritual director:
The director will open in prayer and offer an opportunity to sit quietly for a few moments to transition into the sacred space of the conversation
You will be invited to begin the conversation by telling your story or by talking about something that is concerning you or by asking a question you’ve been wrestling with
If you aren’t sure where to begin, the director may ask you a question such as “How is your soul?” or “When have you felt close to God recently?”
Direction sessions generally last for 1 hour
Spiritual direction conversations are confidential
Everyone who serves on our spiritual directing team has completed a two-year certified training program or is currently enrolled in the Sustainable Faith School of Spiritual Direction.
